Rep. Pettersen Statement on President Biden’s State of the Union Address

WASHINGTON—Today, U.S. Representative Brittany Pettersen (CO-07) released the following statement on President Biden’s State of the Union address to the nation:

“Tonight, I had the honor of sitting for the first time in the House of Representatives as the President addressed the American people. Right now, our country is at a tipping point. As we continue to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, our economy is growing stronger each day and unemployment has been at a record low. The state of our nation is strong, but the people of Colorado’s Seventh Congressional District sent me here because there is so much work still to be done.

“Too many Coloradans are struggling to make ends meet or don’t feel safe in their own communities. In his address, President Biden outlined our bold plan to attack inflation head-on, lower health care and housing costs, and make sure all parents can afford and access quality child care. He also emphasized a top priority from my time fighting in Colorado—passing commonsense gun laws to keep the most dangerous weapons off our streets.

“A story tonight that I’m sure hit home with a lot of Coloradans is that of guest Doug Griffin, who lost his 20-year old daughter to a fentanyl overdose. I know all too well the toll an addiction can cause on a family, as my mother struggled with an opioid addiction for 30 years after being overprescribed medication following a surgery. This is a crisis affecting every corner of our country, with more people now dead from the opioid epidemic than all world wars combined. As the President affirmed tonight, we have no choice but to work together to address this public health crisis and save lives.

“I look forward to working alongside the President and my colleagues in Congress to forge a brighter future for Colorado and the nation.”
