Lawmakers react to decision to move Space Command
Washington,
September 3, 2025
After President Trump’s announced plans on Tuesday to move U.S. Space Command headquarters from Colorado to Alabama, lawmakers spoke out about how the decision could impact their states and the nation. Members of Congress from Alabama celebrated the decision while Colorado leaders said it was be a harmful move that they will fight. “We are so excited to be able to call Space Command home,” said Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL), who joined President Trump in the Oval Office for the announcement. The Yellowhammer State’s congressional delegation has long been pushing to relocate the headquarters to the city of Huntsville. “Just the whole delegation was very excited to be here,” said Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-AL). “And as the president was saying, we were very persistent.” After seven years and two presidential administrations, the lawmakers’ goal of bringing U.S. Space Command to Alabama came to fruition when President Trump announced that he would transfer the site from Colorado Springs to Huntsville. “Donald Trump, he gets it. He understands what we’ve got to do. He’s about national security. He evaluated, all the possibilities. And it came back to Alabama as best for national security,” said Rep. Dale Strong, (R-AL). Strong said the move will bring thousands of new jobs for Alabamans and a safer country for all because of Huntsville’s long history with the defense and aerospace industries. “A lot of the work that we’re doing on a potential Iron Dome or Golden Dome here in America, that work is already done in Huntsville, Alabama,” said Sen. Britt. But for Colorado lawmakers, the decision to move Space Command out of their state was a huge blow. In joint bipartisan statement, every member of the state’s congressional delegation said “moving Space Command Headquarters weakens our National Security at the worst possible time.” Senator Michale Bennet (D-CO) wrote on X that the president’s decision was “a naked abuse of power.” Congressman Jason Crow (D-CO) also posted about the move on X, writing, “Trump says the quiet part out loud: He’s moving Space Command to score political points & punish Colorado.” Congresswoman Brittany Pettersen (D-CO) posted that the change was “a blatant waste of taxpayer dollars. The rightful home of Space Command has been & always will be Colorado.” The joint statement from the Colorado congressional delegation also said that the ten members are “united in fighting to reverse the decision.” |
