The lawlessness and blatant corruption we’re seeing from the Trump administration right now is downright astonishing. The number one question my team and I have been getting from Coloradans right now is– what can we be doing? I know these are incredibly scary times, and I want you to know that I am doing everything in my power to stand up and fight back alongside you. This series is meant to keep you informed and provide an overview of what we can expect in the coming weeks as we continue to face uncertainty during these tumultuous times.
Here’s an overview of what's happening in Congress and in the news this week:
Cracking Down on Trump’s Corruption
Trump has been profiting off his position as president, making a billion dollars off a Trump meme coin. This is just his latest scam to enrich himself at the expense of the rest of us. It’s absolutely disgraceful.
As a member of the House Financial Services Committee, I supported amendments that would close loopholes that allow for this blatant corruption and profiteering. I’m grateful I have had a seat at the negotiating table throughout the process. Unfortunately, the final bill was moved forward without these strong accountability measures. I’m hopeful the Senate will make the necessary changes so Trump and future leaders can’t profit from their positions of power.
Demanding Answers for ICE’s Immigration Raids
Trump has been deploying ICE to terrorize immigrant communities and deport law-abiding people, and even deport U.S. citizens. People are terrified to go to school, the hospital, or leave their homes right now. Trump must be held accountable for the brazen lawlessness we’re seeing.
I joined my colleagues in the Democratic Women’s Caucus in demanding an immediate investigation into the despicable treatment of women at the hands of ICE agents. Reports of violent detention of women – even those who are pregnant – are deeply disturbing and beyond inhumane. Trump owes us answers – now. If ICE is going to carry this sweeping, indiscriminate mass detention – even of U.S. citizens – the very least it can do is ensure safe, humane, and basic medical care.
Voting Against DOGE Cuts to Gut Public Broadcasting
Public broadcasting like NPR and PBS play a critical role in delivering unbiased sources of news and information to people in Colorado and across the country. Colorado Public Radio keeps Coloradans informed on what’s going on in Congress and across the world. Our rural communities depend on public broadcasting to keep people updated during natural disasters and emergencies. Unfortunately, Republicans moved forward with Trump’s sweeping request to claw back billions of dollars in federal funding for public broadcasting, codifying Elon Musk’s DOGE cuts that do nothing to save us money or make our government work more efficiently. This only jeopardizes our global standing and ability to keep our communities in America and abroad safe.
Not only did I vote against these disastrous cuts multiple times, but I joined multiple efforts in Congress demanding that Trump reverse course and support access to public media. I also joined support for lawsuits against the illegal mass firings of employees at USAID. I will always use my position in Congress to defend our federal workforce and the resources our communities count on.
Fighting to Stop Trump’s Tariffs
Trump is also abusing emergency powers to slap reckless tariffs on hardworking families and small businesses with zero input from Congress. He’s only making life more expensive even though he promised to lower costs on “Day One.”
That’s why I joined nearly 200 Democrats in filing a court brief challenging Trump’s unlawful use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to hike prices on everything from appliances to groceries.
These aren’t strategic tariffs. They’re political stunts that make everyday life more expensive for working families. Trump doesn’t care about us, and he never has. We’re taking him to court to defend Congress’s constitutional authority and protect Colorado families from being forced to foot the bill for this reckless trade war.
An Update In the Courts: Federal Judges Are Blocking Trump’s Worst Attacks
Here’s what we’ve stopped so far:
✅Protected birthright citizenship: A Republican-appointed judge blocked Trump’s executive order that tried to strip babies born in the U.S. of citizenship.
✅Secured a 15-day pause to keep funding flowing to Planned Parenthoodso Coloradans can still access cancer screenings and checkups (for now).
✅Restored censored health websitesTrump tried to wipe clean of basic science and gender health info.
✅Saved AmeriCorps: A judge forced Trump to reinstate $400 million in funding and jobs that serve our kids, veterans, and communities.
✅Blocked cruel immigration lawsthat criminalize people for simply being here.
These victories matter. Because Trump is counting on fear, chaos, and unchecked power. But the judiciary is the most important check we have on his power grab and authoritarian actions.
What’s next and what we’re tracking:
- Government funding:The government officially runs out of money on September 30. Stay tuned as we fight Republicans’ attempts to hijack this process and push us to the brink of a disastrous shutdown.
- Immigration legislation:Republicans are pushing more harmful immigration legislation next week. Make sure to follow along as my team and I provide updates on what is happening on the House floor. I won’t support Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda.
Trump’s dangerous agenda will keep coming. But we’re not going to give up, and won’t let him stop us from showing up.
I’ll keep standing up for our community in the courts, in Congress, and in the community to defend your rights, your family, and your future.
We’ve won some big fights already. But the stakes are only getting higher, and I’m not backing down. I’m right here alongside you.
Until next time, keep speaking out and standing up. I will do the same. And be sure you’re following me onInstagram,Facebook,Bluesky, andX.
